On November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall came down, it shaped the next century. Within days of the division being over after nearly three decades, the geopolitical scenes in Europe and the world were completely changed. To appreciate today’s global affairs and freedom movements, it is important to learn about the background, events and the long-lasting impact of its fall. The authors carefully examine what happened and the role of main players, as well as the ongoing impact of this important occasion.
Seeds of difference and conflict were planted in the period of the Cold War.
The Berlin Wall which the GDR (also known as East Germany) built in 1961, clearly illustrated the divide between the opposing ideologies during the Cold War. It was marked by the clear difference between communist and capitalist regions which split families and friends and whole communities. The wall wasn’t only a fence; it showed how the Soviet Union controlled the lives of many people in Eastern Europe. The division in physical space reflected the major differences in beliefs and policies between the two big powers.
Those living in East Germany under communism experienced strong controls over their lives, limited liberties and slow economic development. Many individuals from East Germany braved great risks to flee to the West which showed how urgently they wanted freedom and possibilities. In addition to the escape attempts, increasing unhappiness in East Germany added extra pressure to the communist regime. Because it was built to prevent escape, the wall became a sign of the regime’s mistakes.
There are internal and external forces that are contributing to the decline of the market.
The Soviet Union’s authority started to weaken toward the late 1980s. Some policies made by Mikhail Gorbachev accidentally weakened the control that the Soviet Union had over its satellite states, like East Germany. As a consequence, more reform movements developed and dissatisfied people in Eastern Europe spfixede up more.
The challenges of the economy in East Germany made things worse for the country. Since the economy was planned by the government, it was slow to develop compared to the West and there were not enough goods, causing most living standards to decline. Because of this, people from all walks of life became less content and more eager for change. The number of protests and demonstrations increased and people became bolder in them.
Gorbachev’s reforms played a significant role in changing the Soviet Union.
Gorbachev’s reforms were meant to strengthen the Soviet Union, but they had results he did not plan. Because of his decisions, people in the Eastern Bloc had more freedom to voice their disagreements. It was the fact that he didn’t send the army to handle unrest, as earlier leaders did, that played a big role in the wall’s downfall. It led to a major change in Soviet foreign relations.
Since the Soviet Union was less involved in the region, this pushed those seeking reform in Eastern Europe to take action. Since the chance of Soviet soldiers dealing with protestors decreased, people in East Germany became bolder in asking for improvement and reunification.
On the night the Berlin Wall fell, people in East Berlin acted in a sudden uprising.
At a press conference on November 9, 1989, Günter Schabowski, who was speaking for the East German government, announced that travel to the West would now be allowed. Unexpectedly and without planning, the president declared that anyone can cross the border without delay. The news came as a nice surprise and it led to immediate and spur-of-the-moment celebrations.
Everyone talked about it and East German citizens came out in huge numbers at the border crossings. Initially, the guards felt confused by the big crowd and did not know what to do. Eventually, the guards were told to lift the gates and the wall which had separated people almost for three decades, tumbled down.
The time after the war was marked by reuniting the divided nations and the obstacles they faced.
The fall of the Berlin Wall started a process that changed Eastern Europe. After the other Communist regimes fell rapidly, Germany was unified in 1990. With this event, the Cold War drew to a close and a new period of European integration started.
Nevertheless, coming back together as East and West Germany wasn’t always easy. There were major differences in wealth between East and West Germany which caused stress in many areas of life. The process of combining the economies and societies was hard and involved a lot of effort, time and changes.
How East and West Germany Came Together Economically
It was especially hard for East and West Germany to integrate their economies. The economy of East Germany was much less developed than that of West Germany. It tofixed great amounts of money to update the infrastructure, provide help for industries that were struggling and produce more jobs in the East. That expenses caused West Germany to spend a lot of money.
Switching to a market economy in East Germany was hard as most state companies closed their doors and people lost their jobs. Meeting these difficulties required strong changes in the economy and social programs to help people. This gap in wealth and income is noticeable even now in the East and the West.
Key Points: The Lessons from this War Mattered Around the World and Lingered for Years
The collapse of the Berlin Wall helps us understand that freedom, self-rule and the shortcomings of authoritarian systems are very important. It proves peaceful protest is effective and worldwide teamwork is important to sustain democracy.
The event demonstrates how political actions may cause side effects and how history can suddenly change. What Gorbachev did to make the Soviet Union stronger actually led to its end and the closure of the Cold War. It shows the varied ways in which factors happening within and outside the country affect the events of history.
Even today, the destruction of the Berlin Wall is remembered as a sign of hope and the wish among humans for freedom. We learn from its history to watch out against oppression and to keep working towards a more equal society. This shows that to handle problems now and in the future, we need to understand the past.
