by | Oct 22, 2024 | Original Berlin

The event of the falling of the Germans wall in 1989was historical in terms of political change across the world representing Cold War Era. This historic event influenced the people living in East and West, and, generally, the whole world.

Rise of the Berlin Wall

However, it isn’t possible to determine the great importance of the Wall’s fall without knowing about its background. “The berlin wall was built in 1961 by the people of Germand Democratic Republic better known as east Germany with the aim of separating east Berlin from west Berlin”. The Wall was built to halt the escaping of East Germans into West Germans that was more developed and contained far more facilities.

Such a barrier separated families and communities and was made from concrete walls, barbed wire, and watchtowers. It took the pride of place when symbolising the ideological and political split between the communism dominated East and the democracy dominated West during the time of Cold War.

The Fall of the Wall

After that, on November 9, 1989, E Germany unexpectedly declared that it opened the borders that means the right for GDR people to go westward. Many East Germans went to the wall and to such landmarks as the Brandenburg Gate and wanted to cross the border. The border guards, who did not expect such an action, were forced to succumb to such actions and opened the borders to the public.

It depicts the elation that was depicted on that fateful night through the eyes of the world cameras. People across the German border began pulling the wall, literally deconstructing one of the most defining iconic boundaries of division for nearly three decades. This gave a powerful meaning and message to the images people dancing, embracing and celebrating.

Impacts and Significance

1. Reunification of Germany

The break down of the Berlin wall led to the final reunion of Germany following unification. Subsequent to this, consultations between East and West Germany commenced and in October 3, 1990 formal reunification was affected. This event welcomed families, friends and communities that had been for many years divided by political barriers.

2. End of the Cold War

The breakdown of the Berlin Wall was a indicative of end of cold war- a war that had been going on for over 40 years. The culmination of tensions between two superpowers, that was the United States and the Soviet Union, occurred as Eastern Bloc countries gradually began transition from communism to democracy and a market economy. This was a significant point in international relations where the world transition from traditional geopolitics to globalization began together with orientation to freedoms.

3. Effects upon the European continent and throughout the world

Other nations also felt the impact of the event as the fall of the Free World’s most emblematic symbol, the Berlin Wall. It helped so many people in different parts of the world struggling for freedom, democracy and the like opposing their awful ruled governments. The fall of the Berlin Wall last in an achievement of unity and liberty over separateness and tyranny therefore.

Furthermore, the break down of the Berlin Wall saw many countries from the former Eastern bloc especially the integration of the EU. The integration led to more collaboration, better economy and stability in the Europe area.

Legacy of the Berlin Wall

In spite of the physical destruction of the Wall still it remains as an icon for separation and integration. Today wall is blown away yet pieces of them exist in various museums and monuments for the record of historical events.

This is a timely message but one can really appreciate the true meaning of this message when one looks at the events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall. It has lessons for future generation; this is a social message which underlines the necessity of coming over the bar and the building of the bridges, to have the better world at all.
