Understanding the Origins of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was concrete and political division that was put up by the government of the German Democratic Republic East Germany in 1961. East and West, it bordered the city of Berlin and was specifically used to stop East Germans from crossing over to West. However, the Berlin Wall was one of the most communicated and iconic structure of the Cold War which was defined by relationships between the United States of America and the Soviets.
This paper analyzes the history of the country otherwise known as the so-called ” Peaceful Revolution” in East Germany.
Until the late 1980s East Germany was struggling intensely at the economic and political fronts. More so, oppressiveness of the government, compounding quality of life, and freedom seeking tendencies of people in East Germany are some factors that triggered protests. Finally, a peaceful revolution contributed to the overcoming of the regime and communism.
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The tide was changing on the evening of November 9,1989 when an East German official inadvertently declared that the border between East and West Germany would be open. The word went around, and soon there were thousands of people of East Berlin in front of the checkpoints, insisting on crossing to the West’s part.
The pressure on the guards reached its peak causing them to open the checkpoints to produce a legendary scene. They danced and cheered as people hopped over the wall and when over.to join their country men, women, and children on the other end. This was an affectionate symbolic gesture; the fall of the wall started from there.
What happened to the people after the Wall was no more?
After the break-down of berlin wall there was the reunification of Germany that started. Germany is being reunified officially since October 3, 1990. Divided Streets became united; Death Strip became life Strip; Barrier became entity of liberty and victory over oppression.
Legacy and Symbolism
The breaking down of the Berlin Wall was a world historic moment.. It pointed to the conclusion of the Cold War and became the triumph of democracy over totalitarianism. This led to the reunification of Germany, as well the collapse of Soviet Union, after the fall of the wall.
As the symbol of division and opposites, the case of the Berlin Wall exposed peoples’ negative impact and showed them the necessity of creating unity and making people understand each other. When the barriers where brought down formally, people had experienced the historical event of the fall of the Berlin Wall. People regarded it as the final of the Cold War confrontation, the German reunification, and victory of liberty and democracy. The bringing down of the Berlin Wall is now a symbolical event which broke not only the lives of people in Germany, but across the globe. It serves a purpose of reminding people of the spirit of man and his love for freedom.
