Sachsenhausen Camp Memorial Tour
Lying just outside Berlin, Sachsenhausen was the first purpose-built camp established under Heinrich Himmler. Originally conceived as a place to subjugate enemies of the Nazis, some 200,000 people were imprisoned here and subjected to systematic torture, starvation, forced labor and some of the worst living conditions. As you tour the memorial you will uncover the truths about the camp where 50,000 people were brutally murdered by the Nazi’s and 60,000 held captive until 1950 during the Soviet era. Today the Sachsenhausen Memorial stands as a reminder of the horrors of the 20th century.

What to Expect on the Sachsenhausen Tour
Your journey into one of the darkest chapters of human history begins in the heart of Berlin. From there, we take a short train ride to Oranienburg, a town whose history is deeply intertwined with the rise of the Nazi regime.

Our tour will take you through Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, a facility that served not only as a prison for over 200,000 individuals but also as the administrative heart of the Nazi concentration camp system. Opened in 1936 under Heinrich Himmler, it was designed as the prototype of terror—a “model camp” where methods of control, punishment, and mass extermination were tested and perfected.

You will stand in the very places where unimaginable atrocities occurred, and where the resilience of the human spirit was pushed to its limits.

Key Highlights of the Tour
Led by licensed, expert guides, this powerful experience includes:
- Appellplatz (Roll Call Area) – where prisoners stood for hours in all weather
- The Jewish Barracks – stories of survival, persecution, and daily suffering
- The Punishment Cells – where inmates were tortured and isolated
- Station Z – the camp’s execution grounds with a gas chamber, crematorium, and “neck shot facility”
- The Boot Testing Track – forced labor used for military equipment experiments
- The Infirmary and Pathology Centre – where medical experiments were conducted
- Former SS Training Grounds and Villas – now a police training facility, once homes of high-ranking Nazi officers
- Camp Brothel and Kitchen – revealing the daily contradictions of life in the camp
Throughout, you’ll hear the personal accounts of prisoners such as Yakov Dzhugashvili (Stalin’s son), Georg Elser (who attempted to assassinate Hitler), and British Royal Marines used for testing equipment.

The Post-War Legacy
After liberation by the Soviet Army, Sachsenhausen continued to operate as Special Camp No. 7/No. 1, this time under Soviet control. From 1945 to 1950, over 60,000 people were interned there, many of whom perished due to similarly harsh conditions.
In 1961, the East German government established the Sachsenhausen Memorial. Today, it stands as a monument to remembrance and education, a place where the past is not only honored but confronted.
