by | Oct 22, 2024 | Walking Tour

Bundeskanzleramt or the German Chancellery is the official place used by the Chancellor of the Germany. Camped in Berlin, Germany, this makes it a central administrative point of the federal government of Germany and is crucial in the running of the nation. Now we will focus on the German Chancellery and explain the importance of the institution.

Historical formation of the German chancellery

The German Chancellery was set up in 1949 after the rearrangement of Germany after the second world war. Until 1990, when the German Reich was reunified, CAME was housed in Bonn, but afterwards was relocated to Berlin.

Roles and Duties

The German Chancellery has several important functions and responsibilities:

1. Support to the Chancellor

The Chancellery is a support department to the Chancellor in several ways. It accommodates the Chancellor’s office, which is the central nerve in the discharge of the Chancellor’s official responsibilities, reception of foreign dignitaries and formulation of policies. The Chancellor’s office has subordinates and assistants whose role is to help to prepare policies, negotiating and performing other related duties.

2. Co-ordination of various policies implementing by the government

They perform the important functions of co-coordinating Governmental policies with the Chancellery. They help in coordination and flow of communication between one ministry and the other or between the government departments in order to enhance the working of the Chancellor’s program. Of course, this co-ordination is imperative in the working of the federal system of government.

3. Legislative Initiatives

Quite instructively, the legislative proposals that are to be implemented are normally developed and administrated by the Chancellery. It is in direct cooperation with the federal ministries, prepares bills and submits new legal measures to the parliament. The Chancellery is also responsible for observing the development of legislation and reporting on compliance with the policy of the Chancellor.

4. International Relations

The Government Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, also known as the German Chancellery, has an important function of occupying Germany’s position in the international relations. It handles the foreign affairs of the government, conducts foreign policy, signs treaties and partners with the international community to attend international affairs. International relations as a part of the Chancellery contribute to the German foreign policy and to the consolidation of the country’s foreign position.

Architectural Significance

However, the building that contains the German Chancellery is not only is used for governmental work but also an architectural one. The building housing the Chancellery of the Federal President was designed by the architects Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank; the façade of the building is purposefully minimalist and compares with the Neoclassical style of new Federal Foreign Office or the Ephrates building of Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

The Chancellery display a large glass frontage – a manifestation of the government to be transparent. From this perspective, the functionality of its layout and fairly substantial size speaks about key principles of effective public administration.

A Tour at the German Chancellery

It should be noted that, the German Chancellery is not operned for public visits to the building. (By Professor Minagere) It is mostly a working office and housing infrastructure of the Chancellor. However, the specific glimpses of the Chancellery can be obtained along with more detailed information on its function within the German political system if one visits, for instance, the Federal Press Conference Building or takes the driving city tour around the main historical and political sights of the country.

Conclusion

The German Chancellery is situated at Berlin, Germany and it is core structure of the government. It is the chancellor’s working and living place as well as it is responsible for the administration of the policy of different cabinets, diplomatic service as well as state formation of legislative projects. Although the Chancellery is still closed to the public, many visitors to Berlin will find its architectural and importance in the political life of Germany compelling to study as they explore the city.
