What is the International Congress Centre (ICC) with radio tower in Berlin, Germany?

by | Nov 5, 2024 | Walking Tour

Berlin’s International Congress Centre (ICC) with a radio tower joins a congress hall with a wonderful viewing tower. This architectural wonder was built by Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte, and closed in 1979. There was nothing like it so it has become the modernist emblem of ingenuity for its unique and futuristic form and is even named after a naive being who only sees perfection and symbolizes what I would call positive utopia.

Architectural design and engineering

Its unusual shape, that of an inverted pyramid with a soaring observation tower in the middle, makes the ICC radio tower one of Berlin’s highest buildings, reaching some 150 meters. The building shows its modernistic stance from its glass and aluminum panel façade.

The ICC is made up of auditoriums, conference rooms and a plethora of exposition halls totalling some 22,000 square meters of event space. The main auditorium, commonly referred to as the ‘Großer Saal,’ or ‘Great Hall,’ would fit for large scale meetings and seminars and would hold up to 3,000 people.

Goals and purposes

Located at the ICC are trade events, conferences, concerts and international activities. Many international events has been held in it; include the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 1995 and the G20 Youth Summit in 2008.

It is what international and national businesses like because of its strategic location in the heart of Berlin – excellent transport, world class facilities. The ICC is situated close to major hotels, restaurants, and events, which is good for the guests, if it means there’s no room for mistakes.

The Tower for Observations

Berlin is seen at a panoramic scale from the ICC viewing tower. Guests can take a super speedy rise to the top with a 360 degree view of Berlin Cathedral, Brandenburg Gate and Tiergarten park amongst other city icons.

With morning sunshine, with evening sunshine, with a foggy focus, the perspective tower it’s an absolute must see if you’re on a local hoping to take in Berlin’s magnificence from above or going to the bird’s eye point of view of the city itself.

Events and displays

From the start, the ICC is planning a large array of events throughout the year to cater to the diverse interests and sectors. The ICC always hosts something, whether it be international commercial exhibits or cultural events or musical concerts.

Hosting takes place at one of the largest consumer electronics fairs in the world, the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA), and at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), usually simply referred to as the Berlinale.

Guide for Visitors

Should you be visiting the ICC, these hints will help to enhance your experience:

  • See the ICC’s website for upcoming concerts and events appropriate for your interests.
  • Consider buying tickets ahead of time to cut through large waits.
