What makes the Engelbecken in Berlin, Germany a hidden gem?

by | Oct 22, 2024 | Walking Tour

I bet the average tourist is more likely to take a photo with ‘Brandenburg Gate’ or ‘Reichstag’ at the background in Berlin. However, if you want to see something extraordinary and unheard of, not visited by many people – you should take a trip to Engelbecken, commonly known as Angel’s Pool. The artificial lake is attracting tourists because of the beautiful scenic area as it is situated in the middle of the city. So, why is the Engelbecken a thing at all? Let’s dive in and find out!

The History of Engelbecken

The Engelbecken can be traced back to 19 th century and has much history associated to it. Originally it was constructed as the branch of the Berlin waterway; it was used as basin for shipping. Unfortunately the lake was no longer used and in the eighties it was turned into a recreation ground for the people from the estates.

Today it is not only one of the city’s picturesque areas where people can leave, but also a site that is associated with the urban regeneration processes. Next to it the area has been developed more than somewhat with new builds of modern apartment complexes, as well as new restaurants– however the general feel of the area is not lost and the relatively new buildings have successfully maintained the historical tone of the neighborhood.

Exploring the Engelbecken

It is once in a while that one can have a walk along the water body of the Engelbecken. Tropical greens, beautiful blooms, and delightful benches which make for a splendid walk, sit-down snack, or even a barbecue. There are also numerous water birds which can be seen in the lake and surrounding makes the environment very serene.

For those mirroring a bit more energy, you have an option for riding a rowboat and savor the beauty of Engelbecken and its rather smooth waves. This lets you get a complete away from everything experience while also being able to view the city from a very different vantage point.

Engelbecken Highlights

Let’s take a closer look at some of the highlights that make the Engelbecken a must-visit spot in Berlin:

1. The Shattered Choir-S St. Michael’s Church

St. Michael’s Church, which stands nearby Engelbecken, underwent major partial destruction during the Second World War. Now, what remains of the church has become vitalized as a symbol of the city’s trouble past.

2. Kottbusser Damm Bridge

The Kottbusser Damm Bridge is a splendid work of architecture which extends over the Engelbecken. The center’s minimalist architecture and its beautiful surroundings are perfect for taking great pictures.

3. Cafes and Restaurants.

So if you’re in the mood for coffee, or a cocktail, or just some food, Engelbecken has got it all for you. But there is a number of cafes and restaurants that can provide as many varieties of dishes to meet all customers needs.

How to Get to Engelbecken

For the record it is quite easy to get to the Engelbecken because of the effective and efficient transport system of Berlin. Another way is to go by subway, U8 Schönleinstraße, then turn and in 10 minutes, you reach the lake. Or you may take a tram or a bus to get to the surrounding areas of the building.

Conclusion

The Engelbecken is not so famous as many sights in Berlin; however, it is a wonderful and rather quiet place worth a visit. Be it for a quiet walk, for a romantic stroll or photoshoot, the Engelbecken is the perfect place for all of it. So remember the next time you are in Berlin do take sometime of your busy schedule to go through this lovely gem in the middle of the city.
