If you’re planning a trip to Berlin or considering moving to the city, it’s important to know that while Berlin is a generally safe city, there are still some neighborhoods that may not be ideal for tourists or residents. It’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area. In this blog post, we’ll explore some neighborhoods in Berlin that are known for having higher crime rates or may not be as safe as others.
Kreuzberg
It is a nightlife neighborhood and alternative culture neighborhood Kreuzberg. It’s a popular tourist area and so has its areas that may not be so safe. For instance at night in the Oranienstraße area it can get rather crowded and you should be wise and aware of your belongings. I should also point out that drug use is more visible some parts of Kreuzberg is not suitable for everyone.
Moabit
It is a district found just northwest of the city center on Moabit. Even after recent redevelopment, there are areas that are higher crime ridden. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing have been reported at night in the Turmstraße and Beusselstraße areas, so it’s best to avoid those areas. Visiting Moabit means to always stay vigilant and always be aware of your surroundings.
Wedding
Springer: Wedding is a varied neighborhood in Berlin, but there are some areas that aren’t as safe. Most of Wedding is safe to visit during the daytime but some parts of the district should be explored while during the day. In the past, for instance, crime has been higher in areas such as nearby Leopoldplatz and Soldiner Straße. These areas are enough to alert us and avoid walking in it alone at night time.
Marzahn-Hellersdorf
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf district is part of Berlin. While it is a calm place to live for the people in the area, it’s not usually cited as an area for tourist. Some parts feel isolated, especially at night, it’s a vast district. Marzahn-Hellersdorf is a place you should never visit during dark hours – only with a friend and during daylight.
Mitte (Alexandraplatz)
The part of the district of Mitte is a gateway to old Berlin in general and is a booming tourist area because of its central location and historical landmarks. But visiting Alexanderplatz is never a good idea for people new to Berlin, especially during crowded conditions. Around the square have been reported incidents of pickpocketing, and other petty crimes. Be on the alert, keep your belongings safe and don’t encounter suspicious individuals or illegal street vendors.
Conclusion
While Berlin is generally a safe city, it’s crucial to be mindful of the neighborhoods you visit. It’s always recommended to stay informed, plan your routes in advance, and be aware of your surroundings.
